Dwarf broad bean with a good reputation for withstanding a gale.  This variety hardy and robust variety has even proven to grow well in the Western Isles.  Suitable for sowing in Spring or Autumn, 'The Sutton' will grow to around 45cm tall with multiple stems each growing a large number of pods with 4, possibly 5 beans in each.  Also a great variety for growing in pots or small gardens.

Growing Info

Sow into deep cell trays, root trainers or loo roll tubes in Feb/March under cover and plant out when the plants are around 10 cm tall  (after 3/4 weeks).  Alternatively, direct sow in April/May once the ground has warmed up to >10°C.

Broad beans can also be sown in Autumn October/November for an extra early crop in the spring.  They will be happier overwinter if they are undercover.

TIP: Sowing in trays or root trainers can significantly reduce your losses due to hungry mice.  Be sure to keep the trays out of reach of the mice too though.
