Organic Carlin Pea - Red Fox *NEW*
Pisum sativum ~ 40 seeds.
A traditional drying pea that's easy to grow, high in protein with an earthy and nutty flavour. Plants reach 50–60 cm tall and produce many tendrils, so minimal staking is required. They produce beautiful pink bi-colour flowers, followed by mottled brown peas.
Carlin peas have a long history in the UK, particularly in Northern England, where they’ve been a Lent tradition for centuries. Traditionally, they were boiled and served with vinegar and salt as “Parched Peas” at markets and fairs. We like to cook up Carlin peas during the winter in hearty stews and curries.
Growing Info
We sow peas in modules in March for transplanting outdoors in mid to late April, giving young plants some protection from wind in exposed spots. Alternatively, sow directly into the soil from April to May. June is also a good time for sowing a late summer or autumn harvest.
Tips: Try hanging old CD's on a string from the pea supports to keep the birds off, most genres tested seem to be effective.
