Organic Pea - Gradus *NEW*

£3.00

Pisum sativum ~ 20 seeds. **Limited release**

'Gradus' is a heritage variety featured in our copies of the Alexander & Brown Seed Catalogue 1935/39. We have been really impressed with these sturdy plants in our 2024 trials and are excited to make them available.  Due to the limited stock we have and that we want to share it with as many folks as possible, we have reduced the number of seeds per packet for this season.

The Alexander & Brown description from the 1935 catalogue"A large-podded wrinkled variety. A first early variety with pods the size and as well filled as those of Duke of Albany. A most distinct early pea, and alike good for table and for show; height, 3 to 3 and a 1/2 feet"

Alexander & Brown, known as 'The Scottish Seed House, Perth' were in business from 1897 to 1981. Operating from South Methven, Perth, they produced an impressive illustrated seed catalogue of over 100 pages featuring an extensive range of seed potatoes, vegetable and flower seeds.

Gradus is believed to have been originally developed by a talented English gardener and plant breeder, Thomas Laxton (1830-1893).

Growing Info

We sow peas in modules in March for transplanting outdoors in mid to late April, giving young plants some protection from wind in exposed spots. Alternatively, sow directly into the soil from April to May. June is also a good time for sowing a late summer or autumn harvest.

Tips: Try hanging old CD's on a string from the pea supports to keep the birds off, most genres tested seem to be effective.
