Dwarf broad bean with a good reputation for withstanding a gale. This is a hardy and robust variety which has even proven to grow well in the Western Isles. Suitable for sowing in Spring or Autumn, 'The Sutton' will grow to around 45cm tall with multiple stems each growing a large number of pods with 4, possibly 5 beans in each. Growing Info

Sowing: Sow into deep cell trays, root trainers or loo roll tubes in Feb/March undercover. Alternatively, direct sow in April/May once the ground has warmed up to >10°C. Broad beans can also be sown in Autumn (Oct/Nov) for an extra early crop in the spring; they will be happier overwinter if they are undercover.

Spacing: 20-30cm

Harvest: Jun-Aug. Overwintered crops may be ready to harvest from May.

Tips: Plant out when plants are around 10cm tall. Sowing in trays or root trainers can significantly reduce your losses due to hungry mice. Be sure to keep the trays out of reach of the mice too though.

Germination: 96% Nov 2025
