Broad Bean - Black Isle *NEW 2024/25*

£3.00

Vicia faba - approximately 35 seeds.

A very unique black flowered broad bean developed on the Black Isle by a local seed-saving legend, Agric. A truly unique and local variety!

The plants feature stunning dark brown/black flowers as well silvery-blue foliage complemented by striking magenta stems. They grow to a height of 1–1.2 meters, producing multiple stems, each laden with a large number of pods. Each pod typically contains around five beans, making this variety as productive as it is beautiful.

Growing Info

Sow into deep cell trays, root trainers or loo roll tubes in Feb/March under cover and plant out when the plants are around 10 cm tall  (after 3/4 weeks).  Alternatively, direct sow in April/May once the ground has warmed up to >10°C.

Broad beans can also be sown in Autumn October/November for an extra early crop in the spring.  They will be happier overwinter if they are undercover.

TIP: Sowing in trays or root trainers can significantly reduce your losses due to hungry mice.  Be sure to keep the trays out of reach of the mice too though.
